About Dr. Shyam Gupta
A medical career shaped by one clear goal: make eye care easier to understand and access.
My ophthalmology journey has taken me across very different clinical environments — from medical training in Lucknow and Meerut, to hospital-based work in New Delhi, and later to Singapore National Eye Centre as a Clinical Research Fellow. That international experience added another dimension to the way I think about eye care: careful observation, evidence-informed decision-making and clear communication with every patient.
My professional background also includes roles associated with Dr. RML Hospital / PGIMER, New Delhi, including Senior Residency, along with healthcare work connected with Medical Indian 13 (MI13). Today, I am based in Lucknow and see patients at Gupta Eye Center, bringing the perspective gained across these settings into practical, patient-focused ophthalmic care close to home.
The aim remains simple: make eye care easier to understand and navigate. That means listening carefully, examining thoroughly, explaining findings in plain language and discussing treatment choices with the patient rather than around the patient.

An ophthalmology consultation may cover blurred vision, changing spectacle power, cataract symptoms, glaucoma evaluation, retinal concerns, corneal problems, eye irritation, childhood vision concerns and other eye-health symptoms. The exact evaluation depends on your history and examination.
No. Cataract surgery is generally considered when the cloudy lens is affecting useful vision or daily activities. The timing is individualized after examination and discussion of benefits, risks and alternatives.
Existing optic-nerve damage from glaucoma usually cannot be reversed. Treatment is aimed at lowering eye pressure and reducing the risk of further damage, using medicines, laser or surgery as appropriate.
A sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, a dark curtain or shadow, or sudden loss of vision can be warning signs of retinal detachment or another urgent eye problem. Seek prompt eye or emergency care.
No. Refractive surgery requires careful screening. Prescription stability, corneal thickness and shape, dry eye, pupil size, general eye health, medications and other health factors may affect suitability.
Children may not recognize or report blurred vision. Screening can help identify refractive error, amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus and other eye problems while visual development is still taking place.
Bring current glasses or contact-lens information, previous eye reports or prescriptions if available, and a list of medicines and relevant medical conditions. If your pupils are dilated, your vision may be temporarily blurred and bright light may feel uncomfortable.
Treatment planning follows a clinical assessment of symptoms, examination findings and relevant tests. Options, expected benefits, limitations, risks and follow-up are discussed before a treatment decision is made.
